Being able to observe the United States government in action is one of the great privileges of living in DC, and it's easy to do so simply by making a visit to the United States Capitol building, just moments from Capitol Yards DC.
The most popular activity is taking a guided tour of the Capitol, which generally including stops at the Crypt, Rotunda, and National Statuary Hall, though it is sometimes possible to book a tour with specialty stops, too. If you'd like to actually sit in on a congressional session, simply contact the office of your Senator or Representative for passes, and then head up to the appropriate viewing gallery to see lawmakers in action.
Of course, there are plenty of lower-key options, too. One of the easiest visits includes simply wandering around the Capitol's main exhibition hall, where you'll find historical documents and artwork, videos explaining the structure of the US government, interactive computer displays, and much more!
