When the legendary African-American comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory passed away in 2017, many hoped that new generations would be able to appreciate Gregory’s legacy both as an entertainer and as a social critic. Turn Me Loose, a comedic-drama about Gregory’s life, is sure to help in that effort.
By popular demand, the show has extended its run at DC’s Arena Stage through October 21. The show is structured as a series of standup performances, interspersed with one-on-one conversations between Gregory another comic, an interviewer, a heckler, and a cabbie (all played by John Carlin). Since its debut off-Broadway, the show has garnered rave reviews everywhere it has run, thanks to its biting humor and unsparing insights into American culture.
The show runs for 90 minutes with no intermission. Written by Gretchen Law, this production of Turn Me Loose is directed by John Gould Rubin and produced by John Legend’s Get Lifted Film Company.
